Hurrican Isaac

Listening to the increasing devastation and seeing the news pictures of this destructive force I was reminded of my holiday two years ago in Mauritius. Whilst out walking I came across an old abandoned family home and asked about it when I got back to the hotel. An old guy explained that the house was traditionally built but this was no longer ‘fashionable’. The style of houses on the island have changed now and are proving far too expensive to maintain. With the increase in number and frequency of cyclones in the area modern houses built of cement are literally being blown apart and there is no insurance to cover re-building, so people are losing everything. Traditionally built houses, however, allowed the wind to blow through, causing less structural damage, and the means of repairing them were outside in the garden, growing for free.
